about

As in "The secret of durable pigments", I use gestural composition. This time, the poet, essayist, dramatist and actor, Antonin Artaud’s radio play, "To have done with the judgement of god", is faded in. The start point for fading in is random and the piano is, once again, algorithmic. Remaining true to the tradition of what he calls the ‘theatre of cruelty’, we hear Artaud employing a range of disturbing sounds: crying, grunting, speaking, screaming and so on. The aim of this piece is to ‘speak to’ Artaud through piano, though this is not achieved in a call-and-answer kind of way, but rather by relying on the sonic atmosphere for direction.
